Returned “Career Certificates” of work history for employees

2023/10/27

datag, Inc. is committed to enhancing transparency in the assessment of engineers by introducing a "Career Certificate" that comprehensively delineates their professional history.
Our primary objective is to boost employee engagement and mitigate turnover rates by bestowing "Career Certificates" with cross-border applicability.

These certificates serve as an external manifestation of work history and performance data, sourced from third-party certifications, utilizing Verifiable Credentials* technology. This initiative embodies our human resource policy, fostering individual career development by opening doors to career progression, including opportunities in entrepreneurial ventures and career transitions.

On the organizational front, our approach, which encourages individual ownership of one's career, is anticipated to enhance the engagement of overseas human resources, who pose challenges in terms of management and evaluation, while simultaneously curbing attrition rates. Moreover, by tapping into human capital reservoirs, companies can augment their visibility and bolster their recruitment capabilities, thereby establishing a system that mutually benefits both enterprises and individuals in today's fiercely competitive human resource market.

*Verifiable Credentials is a standard proposed by W3C, an international technology standardization organization, enabling the establishment of a system capable of verifying the authenticity of information without necessitating direct contact with the information publisher.

Background of "Career Certificate" Issuance

In recent years, the business landscape has undergone a profound transformation driven by factors such as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, intensified global competition, and a reevaluation of career perspectives in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japan, it is anticipated that by 2030, there will be a deficit of approximately 790,000 IT professionals (*1) due to a shrinking workforce resulting from declining birth rates and an aging population.

In order for companies to maintain competitiveness within this evolving environment, it becomes imperative to attract exceptional talent from across national boundaries. However, Japanese companies find themselves trailing behind technology giants like "GAFA" and China's "BATH," which offer competitive remuneration, favorable working conditions, and global career opportunities. Garnering the attention of international talent is no longer a straightforward task.

Furthermore, as the flow of human resources accelerates, companies are transitioning from being the "selectors" to the "selected." In this changing landscape, highly skilled individuals are increasingly inclined to assess how a company invests in their personal development. Consequently, organizations must cultivate an appealing work environment and fortify their recruitment capabilities.

Hence, a fundamental concept involves supporting "career ownership" by returning to individuals data such as performance metrics and evaluation feedback, which often remain confined within the organization. Career ownership encompasses the notion and mindset of assuming responsibility for one's own career, actively shaping and constructing it.

The "Career Certificate" issued on this occasion is specifically designed to establish a connection between an individual's work history data and their email address. This facilitates the independent storage and portability of data, irrespective of the issuing company, empowering individuals to leverage it for career advancement opportunities, including side jobs and job transitions.

While concerns may arise that such career support could lead to increased turnover, research has demonstrated (*2) that employees with greater career autonomy generally exhibit higher levels of performance, engagement, motivation to learn, and job satisfaction. Moreover, a survey (*3) indicates that approximately half of individuals who have engaged in side jobs report enhanced satisfaction and motivation in their primary employment. Support for career ownership is expected to yield increased productivity and reduced turnover.
